I took a quiz offered by Modern Jeweler that David Federman authored.1 I failed the quiz and decided to seek a formal appraisal education. As recommended by the article, my education began with the core courses offered by the International Society of Appraisers. And, as part of that educational process, I availed myself of an advance level insurance course developed by the late C. Van Northrup. It was a great course, and I learned a lot.
It was not an end-all course for insurance appraising as no course can be that. Hence, this research tutorial will take what Van did to the next stages of advancement.
Thus, I dedicate this contribution to Van!
I want to make a second dedication to David Federman. He has encouraged me all these years to stand firm against the tsunami of old and outdated appraisal methodologies that conflicted with legal requirements that I was discovering through my legal research.
Next, I want to acknowledge Stuart Robertson who volunteered to be a technical editor. His critical peer review was much appreciated and needed.
This is a complete research tutorial with two exceptions. It does not include a report writing tutorial. That will have to be obtained by taking an advanced appraisal tutorial. And it does not detail any product knowledge.
My goal is that students who take this research tutorial will decide to avail themselves of advanced appraisal courses. Valuation societies offer courses. Of course, I would like to see students take the Advanced Personal Property Appraisal (APPA) research tutorial. Regardless, I want enrollees to take a credible courses and become professional appraisers.
Yes, there are other research tutorial available on this website.
Now, study, learn, and most of all make your fellow professionals proud!
